Udaipur/Jaipur: Tribal organisations Friday renewed their demand for the creation of a separate Bhil Pradesh at a gathering held at Mangarh Dham in Rajasthan’s Banswara district, seeking a state comprising tribal-dominated regions of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.Organisers of the movement said a separate state was essential to accelerate the development of Bhil-majority areas while safeguarding the community’s language, culture and identity.Addressing the gathering, Kanti Lal Roat, founder of the Bhil Pradesh Sandesh Yatra, said the demand had its roots in the vision of tribal reformer Govind Guru in the late 19th century.“Govind Guru dreamt of a Bhil Pradesh to preserve the language, culture and history of the Bhil community. Several states have been created based on language, culture and regional identity. The Bhils, too, deserve their own state,” Roat said. He claimed the proposed state would comprise 39 districts spread across the four states.Another member, Vela Ram Ghogra, said the demand was fully in line with constitutional provisions that allow the creation of new states.“We are seeking a separate state, not a separate country. Our demand is constitutional, and the Union government should acknowledge the aspirations of the Bhil community,” Ghogra said, adding that the agitation would be intensified in the coming months. The demand for Bhil Pradesh has resurfaced periodically over the decades, with tribal groups alleging that successive governments have failed to address the developmental challenges of Bhil-dominated regions. Mangarh Dham, the site of the 1913 massacre of tribal freedom fighters, has emerged as a symbolic centre for mobilising support for the movement.
