Jaipur: Eight months after the Jaipur Municipal Corporation’s (JMC) elected board completed its term, several parts of the city are still waiting for the LED streetlights promised under the civic body’s illumination drive. While it announced the installation of 50,000 LED streetlights across Jaipur based on ward-wise requirements, the project remains incomplete, leaving several busy roads poorly lit and raising safety concerns.Some of the city’s busiest stretches, including the Gopalpura and Durgapura flyovers, continue to have nonfunctional or missing streetlights. Long stretches of Madhyam Marg and Patel Marg in Mansarovar also remain dimly lit. Residents say stray cattle frequently wander onto these roads at night, increasing the risk of accidents. A nearly 3-km stretch of New Sanganer Road, which connects to the highway, also lacks adequate street lighting.In Bapu Nagar, near Rajasthan University, residents said poor lighting has become a safety concern, particularly for women and students returning home after dark.“Many stretches remain dark after sunset. Women and students do not feel safe walking alone. We have complained several times, but nothing has changed,” said Neha Sharma, a resident of Bapu Nagar.Mukesh Agrawal, a resident of Mansarovar, said it was difficult to spot stray cattle on Madhyam Marg and Patel Marg at night, resulting in frequent minor accidents.Amit Chaudhary, who lives on New Sanganer Road, said residents repeatedly lodged complaints with JMC and through the 181 helpline over the past three months, but the problem remained unresolved.Executive engineer (light), JMC, Pradeep Sharma, said the civic body attends to complaints it receives. “New Sanganer Road is not under our jurisdiction. We will inspect the lights on Gopalpura flyover and carry out repairs if required,” he said.According to JMC officials, around 10,000 LED streetlights were installed in 50 outer wards during the previous board’s tenure. Another 5,000 lights were planned jointly with the Smart City project and JMC Heritage, but the work could not be completed after funds were exhausted. Residents say the delay has left Jaipur’s promise of brighter and safer streets unfulfilled.
