Jaipur: Resident doctors’ associations in Jaipur and Jodhpur Monday threatened to strike work if govt fails to initiate action in the suicide of a resident doctor from SN Medical College (SNMC), Jodhpur. “It has been 48 hours since our colleague was brutally harassed, leading to his suicide. At the general body meeting of resident doctors held at SNMC Jodhpur, it was decided that if the govt is unable to provide justice to Dr Rakesh Vishnoi within 48 hours, a complete boycott will be initiated,” a doctor said. Symbolic protests were also held in other medical colleges of Rajasthan on Monday even as the family stayed in the mortuary Sunday night.Meanwhile, Rajasthan Medical College Teachers Association (Jodhpur branch) appealed to the principal and controller of SN Medical College Jodhpur to not take action against any medical college teacher without a transparent and detailed investigation. “It is a sensitive issue that requires detailed investigation. HOD (pharmacology) Dr Rajkumar Rathore’s academic and administrative tenure has been satisfactory and without any blot,” RMCTA Jodhpur branch President Dr Ram Niwas Bishnoi wrote to the principal and controller of SN Medical College.Resident doctors’ associations and Vishnoi’s family, however, protested, with the family refusing to accept or cremate his body. “Even after 48 hours of the tragedy, no senior govt official has visited the grieving family,” said Dr Manohar Siyol, Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors (JARD) representative. Resident doctors also pointed out that while initial reports claimed Vishnoi consumed harmful substances, the “real cause” of his death was years of mental harassment, academic pressure, and toxic department culture.
