Jaipur: Major markets in the city’s heritage walled area—Johri Bazaar, Tripolia Bazaar, Chandpole Bazaar, and Kishanpole Bazaar—are struggling with widespread encroachment and rooftop neglect, raising serious safety and maintenance concerns.Verandahs in these markets have been illegally occupied by makeshift shops, while their rooftops have become dumping grounds for garbage, air-conditioner condenser units, water tanks, and tangled electric wires. Traders warn these unauthorised installations not only mar the historic charm of the bazaars but also pose increasing fire and drainage risks.Earlier this week, a fire broke out in Johri Bazaar after a short circuit in a transformer ignited garbage piled up on a rooftop. The incident has sparked alarm among traders, who are now urging authorities to launch regular cleaning and inspection drives atop these structures.“During monsoons, rooftop garbage blocks drainage outlets, leading to waterlogging and seepage into the shops below,” said Suresh Saini, general secretary of Jaipur Vyapar Mahasangh. “The risk of fire during peak summer is real. We have requested the electricity department to shift overhead wires underground,” he added.Rajendra Kumar Gupta, president of Tripolia Bazaar Traders’ Association, said the Jaipur Municipal Corporation must take responsibility for cleaning rooftop areas if it claims ownership of the verandahs.Kailash Mittal, general secretary of Johri Bazaar Traders’ Association, echoed the concern, saying clogged drains and fire hazards from rooftop debris are persistent issues. “The Corporation must include rooftop cleaning in its regular maintenance schedule,” he said.
