Jaipur: In a significant political development on Monday, Congress state president and MLA Govind Singh Dotasra resigned from his position on the assembly’s Estimates Committee ‘B’, citing concerns over alleged partisan decisions by Rajasthan Speaker Vasudev Devnani. The resignation comes in protest of two controversial decisions: the sudden removal of Congress MLA Narendra Budania from his position as chairman of the assembly’s Privileges and Subordinate Legislation Committee within just 15 days of appointment and the continuing delay in disqualifying BJP MLA Kanwarlal Meenafrom assembly membership despite his three-year jail sentence awarded by a court and the Supreme Court refusing to grant him any relief. Announcing his resignation on social media platform ‘X’, Dotasra emphasised the importance of impartiality in constitutional positions, stating that recent decisions by Speaker Devnani “reveal tendencies that are against the core spirit of the Constitution and are completely biased.“The Congress state president particularly highlighted the case of BJP MLA Meena, who received a three-year sentence from a trial court that was upheld by the Rajasthan High Court on May 1. According to law, representatives sentenced to more than two years in prison face automatic disqualification, said Dotasra. “However, despite opposition memorandums to the Speaker, Meena’s membership remains intact till date,” the opposition party president.“Assembly committees are not merely a rubber stamp for the ruling party,” Dotasra asserted, emphasising their crucial role in maintaining balanced dialogue and oversight.
