Jaipur: In a miraculous escape, around 50 patients were rescued from a fire that erupted in a ward located above the emergency unit of Jhalawar SRG District Hospital early Monday morning.The incident, which occurred around 5:30am, was attributed to a suspected short circuit in an air conditioning unit.Hospital authorities said that patients and their relatives were deep in sleep when the fire broke out. Staff members first detected smoke in the ward and quickly rushed to locate its source, only to discover flames rapidly engulfing the area. The fire was so intense that it was visible from outside the hospital, with flames billowing from the rooftop of the ward, which was constructed with fabricated materials.As the smoke began to fill the ward, family members of the patients sprang into action, desperately trying to save their loved ones. Fortunately, the hospital administration activated emergency protocols swiftly, relocating all patients from the ward, which housed individuals undergoing treatment for various conditions, including neurosurgery, urology, medicine and geriatrics.Dr Sanjay Porwal, Dean of Jhalawar Medical College, told TOI, “Short circuit in an AC unit might have caused the fire. We have contacted the company that installed the ACs and a committee has been formed to investigate the incident.” The air conditioning units are currently under warranty and representatives from the installation company were on-site to commence repair work, said Porwal.Despite the alarming situation, hospital officials emphasised that the facility is equipped with adequate fire safety measures. Firefighters were called to the scene, and within an hour, the blaze was extinguished, ensuring the safety of all patients and staff.
