Bhilwara: The mayoral election for Bhilwara municipal corporation is set for a contest between BJP’s Jaswant Kanwar and independent candidate Santosh Kanwar, as no Congress councillor filed a nomination Wednesday.Congress city district president Shivram Khatik said the party, following the Pradesh Congress Committee’s directive, will not contest the election on its symbol and will support the independent candidate instead.Santosh Kanwar, an independent councillor from ward 10, submitted her nomination supported by Congress workers. The final candidate list will be confirmed after the nomination withdrawal period ends Sept 18.

BJP has nominated Jaswant Kanwar (38), a first-time councillor with a BA in Political Science and an MA in History, who won ward 9 by defeating Congress candidate Khushboo Sharma by 2,165 votes. If elected, she will be the first woman mayor of Bhilwara municipal corporation, which was upgraded from a municipal council under the current BJP govt.Originating from Lachhuda village and married into a Bhilwara family, Jaswant Kanwar expressed gratitude for the opportunity to run for mayor, emphasising a commitment to implementing govt welfare schemes, particularly for women, and addressing community grievances.
