Jaisalmer: Police registered a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act after a 16-year-old deaf and mute girl was found to be about five months pregnant in Barmer district Tuesday night.The case was filed against a named accused following a complaint from the girl’s family, and police launched an investigation.The girl’s father said he and his son had gone to Jaisalmer to work as labourers. The girl began vomiting two or three days ago and was taken to a nearby govt hospital after her health deteriorated. Doctors found during an examination that she was about five months pregnant.After returning home following treatment, the family communicated with the girl through gestures. She indicated that a youth from the same village had allegedly sexually assaulted her about five months ago when nobody else was home.The family subsequently approached the police station on Tuesday night and lodged a named complaint against the accused.Barmer Additional Superintendent of Police Nitesh Arya said the girl’s medical examination had been conducted and the exact gestational period would be established from the medical report.Arya said the girl’s statement was being recorded before Child Welfare Committee with assistance from specialists trained to communicate with deaf and mute people. Police teams had been formed to trace and arrest the accused, he added.
