Jaipur: Unlike the SMS Hospital, which investigated a May 2025 wrong blood transfusion case for months before removing two accused lab technicians, Jodhpur’s Dr SN Medical College has acted against its staff involved in a wrong blood transfusion within days.The medical college suspended two resident doctors, transferred a nursing officer and terminated a contractual lab technician Saturday, after an inquiry found their negligence in a wrong blood transfusion case involving a postpartum woman at govt-run Umaid Hospital.The patient, 24-year-old Dhapu Bhil from Dawra Bawdi in Jodhpur district, was admitted to Umaid Hospital after a normal delivery and severe anaemia on July 11.
She was first transfused with O-positive blood. During a second transfusion on July 12, she was allegedly given B-positive blood, after which her condition deteriorated.She developed urinary failure and kidney complications and was shifted to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital on July 13, where she underwent dialysis. She was later referred to AIIMS Jodhpur, where doctors said she is currently stable and under close monitoring.Umaid Hospital officials said the inquiry found negligence at three levels. “The committee investigating the case found negligence at three levels. One at the level of resident doctors posted in the ward where the woman was admitted, second at the level of nursing staff of the ward and the third at the level of blood bank technician responsible for dispatching the correct blood bag,” Umaid Hospital Superintendent Dr Mohan Makwana told TOI.Makwana said the nursing officer was removed from the hospital and her case referred to the health directorate. The contractual lab technician was terminated, while the two resident doctors posted in the ward were suspended from Saturday.“The report of investigation has been submitted to the principal of Dr SN Medical College and forwarded to the college’s disciplinary committee, which will decide the action against the resident doctors. We have already suspended them, and further action will be taken by the medical college,” Dr Makwana said.Dr Makwana earlier submitted in writing that Dhapu Bhil’s complications were caused by a wrong blood transfusion and that labour room staff failed to follow procedure.
