Jaipur: Police seized a packet of ambergris, a highly valued substance used in the perfume industry and estimated to be worth around Rs 70 lakh, in Bikaner after intercepting four youths who had allegedly travelled from Maharashtra to deliver it Saturday night.Police said ambergris is a substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales and used as a valuable ingredient in high-end perfumes.Circle officer (City) Anuj Dal said that police arrested one person and detained two minors in connection with the seizure. Police said the fourth youth is also being questioned.Dal said, “Information was received that some youths had arrived in the city with a prohibited substance linked to wildlife. A police team intercepted them and recovered the packet.”Police suspect the youths were acting as couriers and are now trying to establish who supplied the ambergris and who was to receive it in Bikaner. Investigators are also probing the network behind the alleged delivery.The seizure prompted police to examine a possible earlier link. Around 15 days ago, investigators received information that an ambergris sample had been brought to Bikaner. Police are now checking whether the earlier incident and Saturday night’s seizure are connected.Police have initiated action under the Wildlife Protection Act and are questioning the suspects to trace others allegedly involved in the illegal trade.
