OBC panel yet to submit report as Raj govt delays reservation-related data

Jaipur: The Rajasthan State Other Backward Classes (Political Representation) Commission is yet to submit its report on OBC reservation in panchayats as it awaits reservation-related data from the govt, raising concerns over the timeline for the upcoming local body elections. The Rajasthan High Court had directed the Commission to submit its report by June 20, while ordering the state govt to complete the process of holding panchayat and urban local body elections by July 31.Following the High Court’s May 22 order, the State Election Commission also asked the Panchayati Raj Department and the Local Self-Govt Department, to finalise the reservation of seats and posts for local bodies. The Commission reminded the departments that under the Rajasthan Panchayati Raj Election Rules, the state govt is responsible for determining reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and women. The OBC Commission sought panchayat-wise data on the total population and OBC population for all 14,403 gram panchayats, besides updated information related to SC/ST reservation and figures of the backward class population.
