Jaipur: Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) will build green medians along the edges of 11 city pavements as a pilot project to prevent vehicles and roadside carts from taking over pedestrian space.Officials said the landscaped barriers are intended to stop four-wheelers, two-wheelers and thelewalas from climbing onto footpaths and blocking movement. The experiment will test whether green edges can make pavements safer, cleaner and more walkable across busy stretches of Jaipur.

A JDA engineer said encroachment on footpaths has become common across the city. “Cars and thelewalas often occupy pavements, leaving pedestrians with little space to walk. Inside colonies too, many residents design the front portion of their entrances in a way that allows them to park vehicles on pedestrian areas,” the engineer said. The official said the new design has already been introduced on Bhawani Singh Marg near Rambagh Hotel. “This design won’t allow vehicles to access the pavements. It will also beautify the stretches. In future, we may implement it in residential areas as well,” the engineer said. The proposed locations include Bhagwan Das Road, the stretch between Moti Doongri Circle and JDA Circle on JLN Marg, New Sanganer Road from Gurjar Ki Thadi to Ajmer Road, Kings Road, Gopalpura Bypass, Mahesh Nagar 80-feet Road and Hans Marg from Gopalpura Bypass to Riddhi Siddhi Underpass.A senior JDA official said, “Tenders have already been floated, and bids are scheduled to open in mid-November. We plan to start construction work by the end of November.”
