Jaipur: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed authorities to take immediate measures to improve the ecological condition of Mansarovar Lake in Bhilwara following allegations of encroachment and discharge of untreated wastewater into the water body.The order was passed by the Central Zone Bench, Bhopal, comprising Justice Sheo Kumar Singh (Judicial Member) and Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi (Expert Member), while hearing Original Application No. 15/2026 (CZ), Public Power and Awareness Society, Bhilwara vs State of Rajasthan & Others.The application alleged encroachment around the lake and discharge of untreated wastewater, adversely affecting its environmental and ecological health.
During the hearing, counsel for the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) informed the tribunal that an action taken report had been filed. The state govt also appeared before the tribunal, which directed certain corrections in its reply. The NGT asked the remaining respondents who have not yet filed their replies to do so within two weeks.Considering the ongoing monsoon, the tribunal directed authorities to immediately implement the recommendations of the joint committee and the state’s expert member, particularly the mechanical and manual removal of aquatic weeds from the lake to improve its ecological condition.The NGT also directed that all other recommendations contained in the committee’s report be implemented within the prescribed timelines.The matter has been posted for further hearing on Sept 15, 2026.
