Man held after wife battling cancer dies by suicide

Jaipur: A 35-year-old man from Nirman Nagar was arrested Sunday for allegedly abetting his wife’s suicide by repeatedly blaming her for the family’s financial troubles arising from her cancer treatment. Police said the woman, Swapnil Jain, ended her life on July 20 after years of harassment.Shyam Nagar SHO Dalbeer Singh Faujdar said the accused, Akshay Jain, was a habitual drinker who allegedly subjected his wife to both physical and mental torture. “He would often taunt her that large sums were wasted on her medical treatment,” Faujdar said, adding that the couple was also embroiled in a separate dowry dispute.According to police, Swapnil’s father filed a report on July 21, alleging that his daughter was harassed for dowry ever since her marriage to Jain in 2013. He said that Jain and his family regularly assaulted her and demanded money. Whenever the abuse worsened, she would take shelter at her father’s house in Alwar, often accompanied by her son.In 2024, Swapnil lodged an FIR against Akshay Jain at the Women’s Police Station. Police filed a charge sheet, but Jain was granted bail. Despite the ongoing case, she was living with her husband and their 15-year-old son in rented accommodation in Jaipur. On July 20, unable to bear the alleged harassment, Swapnil committed suicide.
