Jaipur: A major accident was narrowly avoided late Friday when a CNG leak from a truck caused panic on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway near Bhankrota. Timely action by the truck driver, fellow motorists, and emergency services helped prevent what could be a serious disaster. The incident brought back grim memories of a similar LPG leak on the same route in Dec last year, when 18 people died following a collision between an LPG tanker and another truck.According to Bhankrota police, the latest incident occurred around 1:15am near an old car showroom on the highway. A truck transporting compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders developed a leak when a valve on one of the cylinders broke in transit. Gas began escaping from the damaged pipe as the vehicle continued moving.Realising the danger, the truck driver immediately pulled over and alerted authorities. He, along with other truck drivers in the vicinity, halted traffic on both sides of the highway to prevent any ignition from friction or sparks. Police and administrative officials from Bhankrota reached the spot soon after and coordinated the emergency response.Officials said the driver initially attempted to slow the leak by wrapping cloth around the broken pipe. Fire brigade teams and an ambulance arrived shortly after. Given the risk, the vehicle—carrying multiple high-pressure CNG cylinders—was escorted to a deserted stretch along the bypass. The gas continued leaking for about 10 minutes before it was fully contained. Fire and police personnel worked together to secure the pipeline and ensure the safe dissipation of the gas into the atmosphere.
