Jaisalmer: Camel herders in the district have voiced strong discontent over delayed payments under the Rajasthan govt’s Camel Conservation Scheme. On Saturday, they submitted a memorandum to the Jaisalmer collector and the animal husbandry department’s joint secretary, demanding immediate release of pending incentives.Sumer Singh Bhati, president of the Shri Degray Camel Conservation Committee, led the protest, highlighting that despite budget approvals for 2023-24 and 2025-26, payments have not been disbursed to eligible herders.Herders claim officials misled them during visits to the department, often sending remote village residents back without resolving payment issues. They warned of escalating protests, threatening to hand over their camels to the administration if their dues are not cleared soon.
The Camel Conservation Scheme aims to curb declining camel populations and offers ₹10,000 for the birth of a calf, disbursed in two instalments. Bhati criticised the scheme’s implementation and alleged corruption, insisting that legitimate herders must receive benefits instead of fraudulent claimants. If action is not taken promptly, herders vow to intensify protests.
