Jaipur: The city’s ranking as the second deadliest for road accident fatalities in the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report has drawn sharp criticism from govt officials and road safety experts, who blamed official indifference and poor coordination among agencies.The NCRB report recorded 1,001 road accident deaths in Jaipur in 2024 which is second highest after Delhi. In 2024 Jaipur recorded 3,256 traffic accidents.Officials said the figure reflects years of neglect in fixing accident-prone stretches, weak enforcement and a policy approach that prioritises traffic flow over safety.A senior civic body official said agencies responsible for roads and traffic have failed to treat road safety as a priority. “Civic bodies remain focused on building traffic infrastructure, while the traffic department concentrates on ensuring smooth vehicle movement. Serious efforts to crack down on violations began only after the Harmada accident in Nov 2025, exposing how reactive the system has become,” the official said.Traffic officials said the 2024 numbers were heavily influenced by the Bhankrota tanker accident in December that year, in which at least 20 people were killed. They also flagged a rise in fatalities in Jaipur North, where deaths in the North Division of the Jaipur Commissionerate increased by 22% between 2021 and 2025.“Several factors are driving the crisis: weak enforcement against traffic violations, badly planned roads, unsafe diversions, and inadequate training of traffic personnel and civic officials. Experts argue that dangerous stretches are rarely redesigned in time, and preventive action often comes only after major tragedies,” another senior official said.Officials warned that without urgent action by all departments, Jaipur’s road safety situation could worsen over the next three to five years. “A complete shift in approach, with stronger enforcement, safer road design, and a major revamp of the traffic department and the transport department’s road safety cell is the need of the hour,” the official added.
