Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court Tuesday called for the records of Shahbaz Ahmed, one of the convicts in the live bomb detection case connected to the 2008 Jaipur serial bomb blasts, while hearing his appeal against conviction. The division bench comprising Justice Aninash Jhingan and Justice Bhuvan Goyal issued notices to the state govt also.Ahmed, who was awarded life imprisonment along with three others by a special court on April 8, is seeking to quash his conviction in the live bomb detection case. His petition highlights that while he was acquitted in the main serial blast case where lives were lost, he stands convicted in the live bomb case where no casualties occurred. The petitioner’s primary contention revolves around an email claiming responsibility for the blasts, which the investigating agency alleged he had sent. “Since he was acquitted in the serial bomb blast case and only one mail was claimed to be sent, his conviction is impugned,” the petition stated. The HC has granted the state govt four weeks to respond to the notices and directed the special court handling the Jaipur bomb blast cases to submit Ahmed’s case file.
