Jaisalmer: Four pilgrims from Rajasthan’s Balotra district were killed and eight others seriously injured when their tempo traveller rammed a stationary trailer on a highway in Punjab on Wednesday morning.The accident occurred around 6 am on the Bathinda-Bikaner National Highway, on the Bathinda-Dabwali stretch, near Daba Jor village between Jodhpur Romana and Gurusar Sanewala in Bathinda district. Preliminary information said 12 pilgrims were travelling from Balotra for the Amarnath Yatra when their vehicle hit the trailer parked on the roadside from behind.

The impact crushed the front of the tempo traveller by about 3 to 4 feet, trapping passengers inside. Police from Thana Sangat and volunteers from Sahara Jan Seva reached the spot after being alerted. With help from local residents, the injured were pulled out of the mangled vehicle and taken to the Civil Hospital in Bathinda.Some of the seriously injured were later referred to AIIMS Bathinda, where they are undergoing treatment.Thana Sangat SHO Jagdeep Singh said police beganan investigation. The initial probe indicated that the vehicle collided with a truck parked along the road, but the exact cause would be confirmed after inquiry.The bodies were kept in the mortuary of the govt hospital in Bathinda for post-mortem. Preliminary information indicated that the deceased and injured were residents of the Balotra area, where the news triggered mourning and concern among families.Civil Hospital emergency doctor Lavdeep Singh said Sahara Jan Seva brought the victims to the hospital. Three people died at the Civil Hospital, while one body was sent to AIIMS Bathinda. All injured passengers are being treated at AIIMS.
