Udaipur: The picturesque Udaipur city known for its stunning lakes and rich heritage, hit a remarkable milestone in 2025, welcoming a record number of tourists. Latest figures from the state tourism department revealed that nearly 21.6 lakh visitors explored the enchanting Lake City this past year, marking the highest footfall in eight years. The data shows that tourism in Udaipur nearly doubled since 2018, highlighting a positive trend and a significant boost to the local economy. Deputy director of tourism department Shikha Saxena noted that the tourism landscape continued to flourish throughout 2025, despite some fluctuations. Of the total tourists, almost 20 lakh were domestic travellers from within India, while foreign visitors numbered around 1.6. The surge in domestic tourism played a crucial role in Udaipur’s recovery and growth, especially as the number of international tourists also started to bounce back slowly after a challenging few years. In 2025, Indian tourists increased by 7.6%, and foreign tourists saw a slight rise of 3.7%. December turned out to be the peak month for tourism, with over 2.8 lakh Indian visitors and about 20,000 foreign travellers exploring the city’s attractions. In contrast, April saw the fewest visitors, which can be attributed to the sweltering heat, with only 95,000 Indian and over 9000 foreign tourists arriving. The month-by-month analysis reveals interesting trends: Udaipur welcomed a steady stream of tourists, with significant numbers each month, compared to earlier years when visits were heavily concentrated in peak seasons. This year, average monthly visitors almost doubled from about 94,700 in 2018 to nearly 1.8 lakh in 2025. The impressive growth came after a difficult period during the pandemic, when tourism nearly grounded to a halt in 2020-21. The recovery began in 2022, gained momentum in 2023-24, and ultimately culminated in this record-breaking year. While it’s clear that domestic tourists have driven most of the growth, foreign visitor numbers remain slower to recover. In 2018, about 18 out of every 100 tourists were foreigners, but in 2025 this fell to about 7-8 out of every 100, reflecting a stronger dependence on domestic visitors. Despite this, the shift towards domestic travel signals a new chapter for Udaipur’s tourism, ensuring that more Indian families are discovering and enjoying the beauty of this captivating city.
