LSG secy inspects Walled City, calls for action to protect UNESCO tag

Jaipur: Local self govt (LSG) department secretary Ravi Jain Wednesday conducted an inspection of the Walled City and instructed officials to work towards preservation of UNESCO Heritage tag given to Jaipur.Jain, along with senior officials reviewed cleanliness and encroachment issues from Ajmeri Gate to Chandpole, Choti and Badi Chaupar, Ramganj, Johari and Sanjay Bazaar. He ordered the immediate removal of temporary and illegal encroachments, strict action against open dumping of garbage, and prioritisation of beautification works.Terming the UNESCO tag ‘a responsibility,’ Jain said sustained on-ground efforts were needed to keep the city organised and attractive, especially during the peak tourist season. Officials were pulled up for poor sanitation at Chandpole and Sanjay Bazaar and notices were issued to erring sanitary inspectors. On Nov 27, TOI reported that, concerned over the state govt’s laxity in preserving the ‘World Heritage’ status of Jaipur’s Walled City, including proceeding with projects without proper heritage impact assessments (HIAs) and demolition of historic homes, UNESCO advised the govt to submit a status report by Dec 1, 2026, failing which the area may lose its UN tag. It also asked the state govt to draft and implement a Special Area Heritage Development Plan (SAHDP) as soon as possible.Municipal commissioner Gaurav Saini said the visit aimed at preserving and enhancing Jaipur’s heritage character. Jain also instructed officials to remain on high alert to prevent garbage dumps at heritage sites, markets and main roads.
