Jaisalmer: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been tasked with taking swift action to safeguard a fossil belonging to the Phytosaur crocodile species, dating back 210 million years, which was recently discovered in Megha village of Jaisalmer district. Union minister of tourism, art and culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, gave the directions during a meeting held with ASI officials and district administration representatives Sunday. During the discussion, Shekhawat called for further research to uncover any additional evidence that could enhance understanding of the Jurassic period. The district administration reported that the excavation site has been secured with fencing and a protective cage has been constructed to ensure the fossil’s safety. Locals are actively monitoring the area round the clock to prevent any potential tampering or theft. In addition to the fossil preservation efforts, Shekhawat urged ASI to prioritise conservation activities for the iconic Sonar Fort. The meeting revealed that illegal constructions within the restricted vicinity of the fort have been identified, and measures are being initiated in cooperation with local authorities to address these violations. Furthermore, the minister highlighted his discussions with the aviation ministry regarding the enhancement of air services to Jaisalmer, aiming to boost tourism in the region.
