Jaisalmer: Tensions between police and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) escalated Tuesday as ABVP workers continued an indefinite sit-in outside the Kotwali police station for the second consecutive day over permission for a proposed Tiranga Yatra.The protest began Monday evening and continued overnight, with workers remaining at the police station gate. On Tuesday morning, protesters recited the Hanuman Chalisa at the site, reiterating their opposition.ABVP workers alleged that police personnel manhandled and pushed their members when they visited Kotwali police station to submit prior intimation for a Tiranga Yatra planned on July 26 to mark Kargil Vijay Diwas. According to ABVP office-bearers, the group went to complete formalities in accordance with rules, but the Station House Officer (SHO) Surjaram Jakhad and a head constable allegedly behaved rudely, abused them, and physically pushed one worker.The organisation demanded the immediate suspension of SHO Jakhad and Head Constable Dipendra Singh Shekhawat. Protesters said they first attempted to meet the district collector and the Superintendent of Police with their complaint but could not secure an appointment, following which they launched the sit-in outside the Kotwali’s main gate.ABVP Department Convener Karnpal Singh Kotda and District Convener Pemp Singh Bhati said they approached police only to submit intimation, not to create disruption. Police deployment was increased outside the station, while the administration appealed for calm.SHO Jakhad denied the allegations, saying ABVP members sought permission directly from police and were told approvals must be obtained from the sub-divisional magistrate as per procedure. He said no misconduct occurred and claims of misbehaviour were false.
