‘Take them, but do not murder democracy’: Jully alleges police pressure on Alwar councillors

Jaipur: Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully Monday alleged that police and administrative machinery were being used to pressure Congress councillors in Alwar ahead of urban local body board formation.Jully took Congress councillors to the Alwar SP’s office, alleging BJP leaders were trying to break the Congress camp after failing to secure clear majorities in some civic bodies. He alleged that police had picked up some Congress councillors and claimed a woman councillor from Ward 10 of Alwar Rural was forcibly taken away by personnel from Malakhera and Naogaon police stations.“If BJP is so keen to take our councillors, we have brought them to the SP office ourselves. Take them, but do not murder democracy,” Jully said.He alleged that Union ministers and state minister-level leaders were directing police officials to influence councillors. “Police should be catching criminals instead of intimidating elected representatives,” he said, demanding action by DGP.Jully also alleged that BJP was using administrative machinery to influence board formation where it lacked a majority. He questioned the election process, including delimitation and the use of EVMs without VVPAT.He said Congress councillors were united and would not be pressured into switching sides.
