Jaipur: Rajasthan’s urban local body elections have emerged as a political test for both Congress organisation and Bhajan Lal Sharma govt, with the results likely to have implications beyond municipal boards.For PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra, this is his third major electoral test after the 2023 Assembly polls and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. For BJP govt, the results will offer a mid-term reading of its urban support base.The Congress’s performance will also be seen against its campaign targeting BJP govt over law and order, unemployment, farmers, education, rising prices, administrative decisions and alleged misuse of govt machinery. The results will indicate whether the party’s campaign has translated into support on the ground.Congress’s recovery in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections gave the party momentum after its Assembly defeat. The bigger question now is whether that recovery has translated into a stronger organisation on the ground. With elections being held across 309 urban local bodies for 10,245 councillor seats, the key measure for Congress will not just be its councillor tally but also the number of municipal boards it manages to control.“For Dotasra, who has been closely involved in candidate selection and organisational management, the outcome will be seen as a test of his grip over the party beyond Jaipur. A strong showing could strengthen his position ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections, while a poor performance could reopen questions about the party’s organisational strategy,” a political analyst said.LoP Tikaram Jully’s role will also be under scrutiny. He has consistently targeted BJP govt on key public issues and has been actively involved in the civic campaign, particularly in Alwar. A strong Congress performance there could strengthen his standing as the party’s second-rung leadership takes shape.Former CM Ashok Gehlot has also continued to take on BJP govt from the front, giving Congress an experienced and recognisable voice in the campaign. Jodhpur will therefore be watched as much as a Gehlot test as a Congress-BJP contest.Kota presents another key contest. A Congress victory would be seen as a setback for BJP leader Om Birla and could reinforce former minister Shanti Dhariwal’s political relevance in the city. The limited visible role of Sachin Pilot in the civic campaign, meanwhile, is likely to trigger fresh discussion about his position within the state unit.
