Farmer body flags Raj HC backlog, seeks fewer holidays and more judges

Jaipur: With about 7.16 lakh cases pending in Rajasthan High Court, including 1.2 lakh matters older than 10 years, Kisan Sangharsh Samiti of Rajasthan has raised concerns that limited working days and frequent holidays are affecting timely delivery of justice. The organisation said it will send a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu seeking a reduction in court holidays and the appointment of more judges to speed up disposal of cases.“There are examples of petitions filed by a man being pursued by his grandson because of pendency,” said Subash Sehgal, spokesperson of Kisan Sangharsh Samiti and a practising lawyer at Sriganganagar district court and Rajasthan High Court. In its representation, the Samiti claimed Rajasthan High Court functions for around 180 days a year. “The limited number of working days, coupled with the growing pendency, leaves litigants waiting for years to get their disputes resolved,” Sehgal said. The organisation said its representation includes the high court calendar for 2026 to support its demands. The representation cited special holidays and work suspensions, alleging the high court observes a special holiday on the last day of every month when lawyers do not work, apart from three to four local holidays. It further alleged that lawyers sometimes suspend work for six to seven consecutive days, slowing judicial proceedings. The Samiti said delays particularly affect ordinary citizens in land, property, family and other civil disputes, and questioned holidays declared for regional religious festivals. It called for what it described as a more rational holiday calendar in a country governed by a secular Constitution.
