Kota: Doctors at New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) in Kota successfully removed an axe lodged deep inside the skull of a 30-year-old man after a complex three-hour surgery Sunday. The patient is stable but remains critical and will continue to be under close observation for the next 8-10 days, doctors said. The victim, Ramjilal Shariya, a resident of the Bhanwargarh police station area in Baran district, was allegedly attacked by an unidentified assailant while he was sleeping with his wife, Mamta, and their daughter at home on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.According to police, Mamta woke up around 2 am after hearing dogs barking and found her husband lying on the floor beside the cot in a pool of blood, with an axe embedded in the left side of his skull. With the help of neighbours, Ramjilal was first taken to the govt hospital in Bhanwargarh and later referred to Baran district hospital. After initial treatment there, he was shifted to NMCH in Kota. The family reached the hospital around 5 am with the victim still bearing the axe, including its handle, lodged in his head.“The patient was brought in a critical condition with a 2.5-cm axe blade embedded deep in the left side of his skull. He had suffered heavy blood loss and his blood pressure was extremely low,” said Dr S.N. Gautam, head of the neurosurgery department at NMCH.Doctors first stabilised the patient and assessed the extent of the injuries. A CT scan proved challenging because of the protruding axe handle. A team of doctors then performed a more than three-hour surgery and successfully removed the axe while ensuring minimal damage to brain tissue.Police have registered a case of attempt to murder against unidentified persons and launched a search for the assailants.Bhanwargarh police station circle inspector Gopichand Arya said the motive behind the attack remains unclear and no previous enmity has surfaced so far.
