Academic incentives in schools for planting, nurturing trees

Jaipur: Starting July, school students and teachers across the state will participate in a month-long green campaign with specific targets, which will fetch academic incentives. Students who plant and maintain 10 saplings will receive 10 additional marks in Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW) assessment. Teachers, who are required to plant 15 saplings each, will see their performance reflected in their school’s annual ranking.“The marks will be awarded based on the survival rate of the planted saplings, ensuring long-term commitment to the initiative,” said an official.Forest department will provide 80 lakh saplings for the campaign, with plantation activities beginning within school premises and extending to surrounding areas, homes and public spaces. The initiative also includes an educational component, with students and teachers creating seed balls using local species and cow dung to enhance survival rates. “Local species have better chances of survival. These seed balls will act as a source of knowledge for students and encourage the habit of plantation among them,” added the official. To ensure survival of plants, 42 partner organisations under Rajasthan Education Initiative will monitor plant growth across schools. This follows last year’s campaign, where 58 lakh saplings were geo-tagged.
