Jaipur: As many as 600 ambulances under the 104 Janani Express service running for pregnant women in Rajasthan came to a grinding halt because the state tender of the current 104 ambulance operating company, Modern Emergency Services, expired on Dec 10, 2025.The National Health Mission (NHM) clarified that services for pregnant women were not affected as 108 ambulance services were operational and ambulances at district level and ambulances on a contract basis were operational without any difficulty. The NHM directed all chief medical health officers to ensure that the operation and management of 104 Janani Express vehicles in the districts were carried out through the Rajasthan Medical Relief Society of the concerned medical institution under the district health society. NHM mission director (state) Dr Amit Yadav said that all the ambulances were handed over to CMHOs Wednesday. “The tender of the company ended on Dec 10, 2025, and now a new tender is in progress, and soon a new firm will operate the ambulances. The ambulance services were not affected, as we have a fleet of over 1,100 ambulances under 108 ambulance services, and at local level, private ambulances are roped in on a contract basis. The govt is paying for them, and patients are getting facilities without any issue.” Virendra Singh Shekhawat, state president of Rajasthan Ambulance Employees Union, said, “Health department knew that contract was expiring on Dec 10, 2025, but still, due to the lethargy and negligence of senior officials of the health department, the new tender process, which should have started six months earlier, was initiated on Nov 26, 2025, which is still under process.” The NHM, on Jan 2, 2026, issued a letter to the firm’s management directing the company to hand over of all 104 ambulance vehicles to CMHOs of the districts concerned within three working days. No payment will be made for any vehicle after midnight of Dec 10, 2025. In case of failure to hand over ambulance vehicles within the stipulated time limit, proceedings will be initiated to forfeit the bank guarantee deposited with the department.
