Jaipur: Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tikaram Jully Tuesday accused the ruling BJP of turning the state assembly into a hub of high-tech political espionage. He alleged that hidden cameras were secretly installed above the seating area of Congress women MLAs in a blatant case of covert monitoring and electronic surveillance, violating legislative traditions and privacy norms.Speaking to reporters in Alwar, Jully said, “Installing cameras directly above the opposition benches where women legislators sit is not only against assembly norms but also violates the very traditions of the legislature.”Jully pointed out that microphones and cameras in the House are officially meant for CCTV surveillance, live telecast, and to maintain Assembly records. “But two newly installed cameras are different—they are not part of the public broadcast. Their feed is accessible only to the Speaker, and they continue unauthorised recording and live streaming/remote monitoring even when the House is adjourned,” he alleged.According to him, the cameras are capable of capturing private conversations and movements of women MLAs, and their recordings can be accessed inside the Speaker’s lounge. Jully warned that such material could be misused to create deepfake videos, doctored footage, and morphed images, leading to character assassination and privacy invasion.Drawing parallels to the Pegasus Spyware Allegations (2021)—where investigations claimed Indian politicians, journalists, and activists were potential targets, Jully said: “This is not simple surveillance; this is intelligence-grade monitoring, a form of illegal snooping and surveillance abuse meant to intimidate opposition voices. When surveillance technology, deepfake tools, and artificial intelligence are combined with political motives, the very integrity of democracy faces a breach of confidentiality, violation of privacy rights, and risk of personal data leakage.“
