Jaipur: Almost a year after two brothers lost their way in the Nahargarh Hills—one found dead, the other missing—the city police are now examining DNA samples to determine if skeletal remains recovered last month belong to the 25-year-old still unaccounted for.DCP (north) Karan Sharma said that while Ashish Sharma, 22, was found dead last year, his elder brother Rahul Sharma remained missing. Police teams on Aug 16 discovered a human skeleton in the hills, believed to be several days old and partly devoured by wild animals.“We have asked for confirmation on whether the skeleton is that of the missing youth. A detailed report is awaited,” Sharma said.Rahul and Ashish, residents of Shastri Nagar, went to the hills on Aug 1 last year. The next day, Ashish’s body was discovered in a bush, but Rahul vanished without a trace. The brothers reportedly lost their way in the rugged terrain. The search for Rahul turned into one of the city’s most extensive operations. Police deployed LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) mapping, conducted an aerial survey with a helicopter, and roped in mines rescue teams from a private company. The rescuers rappelled down gorges near where Ashish’s body was found, but no new leads surfaced. More than 200 personnel were involved in the mission, yet not a single clue emerged.Officials said the discovery of skeletal remains last month may offer a breakthrough, though scepticism remains. “The area where the skeleton was found had been searched earlier, and no clues were detected at the time. There is a possibility the remains belong to someone else,” said an officer. The official added that despite exhaustive efforts, no evidence was recovered in the past year, raising the possibility that Rahul might still be alive.
