Jaipur: Election posters and banners have started covering signboards and other surfaces across Jaipur ahead of municipal elections scheduled for Sept 11, with such instances reported in Jhotwara, Vaishali Nagar and the Walled City. As campaigning enters its final stage, posters of candidates are being put up on roadside spaces, walls and signboards at locations. In the Walled City, posters and banners are visible around Badi Chaupar, Chhoti Chaupar and other areas. The proliferation of election material in the heritage area has raised concerns over the visual character of the city. Jaipur’s Walled City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 and is subject to conservation measures aimed at protecting its historic character. Heritage conservation principles extend beyond monuments and historic buildings to the wider historic urban landscape, including architecture, streets, markets and public spaces. The Walled City is known for its uniform architectural character, pink façades, havelis, traditional markets and historic chaupars. Large posters, banners and hoardings on buildings and public spaces can obscure historic façades and alter the visual character of heritage precincts. Regulation of advertising material, signboards and other installations is therefore an important part of maintaining the appearance of such areas. Despite the need to protect the historic streetscape, election posters have appeared around prominent heritage locations such as Badi Chaupar and Chhoti Chaupar. In several places, the material can be seen covering signboards and other public surfaces. With polling just a day away, the increased use of public spaces for election publicity has added to visual clutter in parts of the Walled City. The issue has also highlighted the challenge of balancing election campaigning with the need to maintain the city’s heritage character and keep its historic façades and public spaces visually accessible.
