Jaipur: A speeding van fatally struck a 36-year-old constable riding his motorcycle on the Jaipur-Sikar Highway in Chomu near Jaipur early Sunday, dragging him nearly 20 feet before coming to a halt.The victim, Rajendra Kumar Samota, was returning to duty at the Jaipur Police Lines after leaving home at dawn. The crash occurred around 7am near the Radhaswami Bagh bridge when the speeding van hit the victim’s bike from behind and continued to drag it. Police said the impact threw Samota off balance and caused severe injuries. Residents rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. “The victim sustained multiple serious injuries to his head and neck and lost excessive blood,” said the official.Police inspected the site, collected evidence, and are reviewing the CCTV footage. Samota joined the Rajasthan police in 2015. His father, a retired Army man, died last year of a heart attack. His elder brother serves in the Army. The constable leaves behind his wife, a six-year-old son, and a three-year-old daughter.Speaking to TOI, the police said that after hitting the constable, the car’s driver, instead of stopping the vehicle, continued to accelerate even as the locals screamed and ran behind him. “The accused, after hitting the victim, went into nearby residential colonies to escape from the police and locals. We have retrieved CCTVs from three different localities to track down the suspect,” said an official.The family of the victim was informed about the tragic incident, and the body was handed over to them after post-mortem. An FIR has been filed in the case. Senior officials have also sought a report of the accident.
