Jaipur: The city is set for a major technology upgrade with artificial intelligence-powered cameras to be installed at 253 of the city’s 423 major intersections under the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), aimed at improving traffic management, law enforcement and urban surveillance.The Jaipur Police Commissionerate has finalised the locations in consultation with the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) and the transport department. The AI-enabled cameras will support multiple agencies by creating a common surveillance platform while automating traffic management.DCP (Traffic) Yogesh Goyal said the cameras would perform a range of functions, including facial recognition to identify suspects, automatic detection of fake or mismatched vehicle number plates, monitoring of traffic violations, and tracking of road cuts and civic infrastructure works.“The system will also optimise traffic signal timings in real time based on vehicle density, helping reduce congestion and improve traffic flow,” Goyal said.Officials said a two-month pilot at Rambagh Circle delivered encouraging results, with AI dynamically altering signal cycles based on live traffic conditions.Initially, the network will be monitored from the Abhay Command Centre at the traffic headquarters, with access provided to various wings of Jaipur Police, regional transport offices and authorised civic agencies. An integrated command centre is also planned if the JDA allocates land for the facility.A senior traffic official said the state govt has sanctioned funds for the project and vendor selection for installation, operation and maintenance is underway. Officials have also studied similar AI-based traffic management systems in cities such as Gangtok and Surat before finalising the rollout plan.“The project will create a unified digital backbone for traffic control, policing and civic monitoring, significantly enhancing Jaipur’s public management capabilities,” the official said.
