Raj launches ₹310cr project to clear old garbage dumps across 152 urban bodies

Jaipur: Rajasthan has launched a Rs 310 crore project to scientifically clear nearly 75 lakh cubic metres of legacy waste — old garbage accumulated over several years — across 152 urban local bodies (ULBs) under the Centre’s Zero Dumpsite mission of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0.The project aims to eliminate ageing garbage dumps through biomining and establish modern waste processing facilities on the reclaimed land to prevent fresh dumping.Work orders have been issued in 30 ULBs for clearing more than 24 lakh cubic metres of legacy waste, while letters of acceptance have been issued in another 40 ULBs covering over 35 lakh cubic metres. Technical evaluation of bids is underway for the remaining 82 ULBs, where around 16 lakh cubic metres of waste is yet to be taken up.Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma Sunday said the initiative would help make Rajasthan’s cities cleaner and more sustainable.“Our govt is committed to making cities cleaner, environmentally friendly and future-ready. Scientific disposal of old waste and the setting up of waste processing plants will not only remove decades-old garbage dumps but also strengthen long-term waste management,” Sharma said.Officials said nearly 24 lakh cubic metres of legacy waste had already been cleared between Nov 2025 and March 2026 under the Centre’s Dumpsite Remediation Accelerator Programme.The biomining process involves excavating old waste, segregating recyclable materials such as plastic and metal, converting combustible waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for use in cement plants and energy generation, and reusing the soil-like material wherever feasible.Officials in the urban development and housing dept said the project would help reclaim valuable urban land while reducing pollution and health risks associated with old dumping grounds.“Scientific disposal of legacy waste will improve sanitation, reduce environmental hazards and help cities transition to sustainable waste management instead of creating new dump sites,” an official said.
