Jaipur: After a spate of rain-triggered road cave-ins across Jaipur, the state govt Wednesday ordered Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) to probe the city gas distributor laying piped natural gas (PNG) lines in the capital.Urban development and housing (UDH) minister Jhabar Singh Kharra said no fresh road-cutting permission for PNG pipelines would be issued until the two inquiries are completed.

Rainfall since July 2 has led to several road cave-ins across the city. Craters have appeared not just in lanes and bylanes, but also on key stretches such as Tonk Road and Sirsi Road, raising concerns over the quality of trenching and restoration work carried out after pipeline-laying.“The city gas distributor was supposed to lay six inch pipelines. They created trenches measuring 8-10 inches in depth. During backfilling, they did not ensure that the gap between the pipeline and the surface was compact. As a result, rainwater seeped into gaps between the road surface and pipelines and created craters,” Kharra alleged.Kharra, who also holds the local self-govt portfolio, said the govt would recover “hefty compensation” from the distributor found responsible for road damage across the city.Officials said the probes would examine whether trenching, backfilling and road restoration norms were followed while laying PNG lines.The state govt has appointed 13 distributors across 41 districts for PNG supply, including one for Jaipur.
