Drain cleanup begins in Jawahar Nagar Kacchi Basti ahead of the monsoon

Jaipur: Civic authorities Sunday began cleaning drains and removing stagnant water in Jawahar Nagar Kacchi Basti ahead of the monsoon season after residents raised concerns over recurring flooding in the settlement. The action followed a memorandum submitted by the Jawahar Nagar Kacchi Basti Vikas Sangharsh Samiti to district collector Sandesh Nayak, highlighting the annual problem of rainwater inundating the area.Nearly 150 families are forced to leave their homes and take shelter in a community centre every year after floodwater enters the settlement. Residents said the situation is worsened by sewage and drain water mixing with stagnant rainwater, creating unhygienic conditions and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.According to the memorandum, Tila numbers 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 fall within a natural drainage zone. During the monsoon, rainwater flowing down from surrounding hill slopes accumulates in large pits near the settlement, creating flood-like conditions and submerging several houses.President of the Jawahar Nagar Kacchi Basti Vikas Sangharsh Samiti, Yugal Khoda said residents have been facing the same problem for years without a permanent solution.“Waterlogging forces families to leave their homes and shift to the community centre every monsoon. We approached the district collector after getting no concrete solution from civic authorities. Now that cleaning work has started, we hope residents will not have to abandon their homes this year,” he said.
