Jaisalmer: Rajasthan has commenced the removal of encroachments on govt land within 0 to 50-km of the international border in the border districts of Jaisalmer and Barmer, following directives from Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a meeting in Bikaner last month. On Thursday, officials demolished an illegal madrassa and a mosque located near Malasar village in the Nachna-Nokh area, close to the Indo-Pakistan border, under stringent security measures. In Barmer, authorities reported the demolition of an illegal mazar (tomb) on govt land in the border village of Bhalgaon. The central govt’s stringent policy regarding encroachments within 50 km of the border necessitated the actions. The local administration has also issued notices to villagers in Bhalgaon and surrounding areas, instructing them to remove illegal structures. On Wednesday, a notice was issued to the son of Bhalgaon administrator, demanding the removal of the mazar by 3pm Thursday. If not complied with, the administration warned of further action. The enforcement teams reached multiple border villages in Barmer, with ongoing removals at one or two locations. The situation during the demolition of the madrassa Rahmania and a mosque was reported as peaceful, under the oversight of the Baap Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Nokh police. In response to these actions, the Congress voiced concerns in Barmer. Baytu MLA Harish Choudhary held a press conference saying, “National security is paramount for us. However, this action seems aimed at undermining Hindu-Muslim brotherhood under the guise of law.” He emphasised that the religious sites were established by locals for worship and criticised the administration for issuing back-dated notices.Barmer MP Ummedaram Beniwal mentioned that he has been approached by residents from various border villages who sought a meeting with local govt officials. He expressed intentions to discuss how to address the issues raised by the residents while preserving communal harmony in the region.
