Woman’s body found in well, robbery suspected

Jaipur: A 53-year-old woman who was missing for eight days was found dead in a well near the Dhund River in Shivdaspura Thursday morning. Preliminary investigations suggest she may have been murdered for her jewellery.Police identified the deceased as Beena Devi, a resident of Ballupura village in Shivdaspura. According to investigators, her body bore deep injury marks and both legs were severed, allegedly to remove the silver anklets she was wearing. Family members told police that her silver anklets, a chain, two rings, gold earrings and a nose pin were missing.Shivdaspura SHO Rajendra Meena said a missing person report was registered after Beena Devi left home around noon on June 11 to buy medicines and did not return. Her family had been searching for her since then. The body was discovered after villagers noticed a foul smell coming from a well behind the Hanumanpura Power Grid Thursday morning. A crowd gathered after a body was spotted inside the well, following which police, civil defence personnel and an FSL team reached the spot.Investigators suspect the body was wrapped in a saree, tied to a large stone, and dumped into the well after the murder. Police and forensic experts collected evidence from the scene before recovering the body. The well where the body was found is about 2 km from Devi’s home. Police, with assistance from the Civil Defence team, retrieved the body from the water and shifted it to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. After learning about the murder, relatives and residents gathered outside Shivdaspura police station and staged a protest, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible. Police said further investigation is underway.
