City police nab 7 in hit-and-run case, main accused absconding

Jaipur: Three days after a rashly driven luxury car ploughed into roadside food stalls at Kharbas Circle in the city’s Mansarovar, killing one and injuring 15, police Monday arrested seven persons in connection with the incident.Police said five were held for criminal harbouring of the accused, while the remaining two face other charges. The main accused in the case, Dinesh Rinwa, who was allegedly driving the car at the time of the accident, is still absconding. Police said they have credible information on the whereabouts of both Rinwa and fellow absconder Ramchandra, adding that their arrests are expected soon.An intensive investigation was launched immediately after the accident, with analysis of CCTV footage, technical surveillance through call detail records and activation of informer networks, investigators said. Several suspects were detained for questioning during the initial stages of the probe.“We established that the car was being driven by Rinwa, who is currently at large. He was accompanied by Mukesh Kumar, a police constable posted at the Rajasthan Police Lines, and two others, Pappu and Ramchandra,” said deputy commissioner of police (South) Rajashri Raj Verma.“Constable Mukesh Kumar and Pappu were arrested for acting with common intent to commit the crime,” he said. The five others arrested for harbouring the accused have been identified as Ashok Meena, Sumeet Kumar, Bhagchand, Shivraj and Nitin.“All five were fully aware that Rinwa had hit several people, resulting in one death and injuries to around 15 others. Despite this, they helped him escape. Some arranged a vehicle for him to flee from the spot, while others provided him shelter at a safe location,” Verma said.“During interrogation, it emerged that they had advised Rinwa to stay away from Jaipur until the matter cooled down,” he added. Police are currently looking into whether Rinwa received any financial assistance to help him evade capture.Police said Rinwa contacted his associates soon after the fatal accident, after which the five accused reached the spot and facilitated his escape. Friday’s incident at Kharbas Circle happened under the jurisdiction of Patrakar Colony police station.
