Jaipur: Ten people, including two women, were arrested Tuesday for allegedly running a fake technical support call centre in Jaipur’s Bhankrota area to obtain American iPhone users’ banking details and siphon money from their accounts. Police seized 19 mobile phones and 12 laptops from the premises.City police’s special commissioner Om Prakash said that the accused allegedly posed as technical support staff, offering to fix customers’ iPhone problems before using the interaction to obtain confidential banking information.Prakash said the gang used X-Lite software and toll-free numbers to contact people in the US.Police identified the arrested accused as Harsh Chauhan (27) from Jhajjar; Krishna (28) from Baksa; Akashi Laba (30) from Darjeeling; Khoja (27) and K.V. (24), both from Meluri; Nishant (24) from Gurugram; Ravindra Kumar (31) from Mahendragarh; Ankit (24) from Jhajjar; Diya Guruji (25) from Darjeeling; and Lishini (25) from Senapati. Their home districts are in Haryana, Assam, West Bengal, Nagaland and Manipur.During preliminary questioning, police found that the accused allegedly used the promise of technical assistance to gain customers’ trust. One of the women allegedly posed as a bank official to extract confidential account details from them.The gang members then shared the information in a Telegram group. Its operators allegedly used the details to access bank accounts and withdraw money. Police said the gang had targeted American citizens and allegedly defrauded them of crores of rupees.Investigators are trying to identify the alleged operators, trace the wider network and establish the total amount stolen.
