JAISALMER: A shocking incident that has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns over mob vigilantism came to light from Joranada village in the Shiv police station area of Rajasthan‘s Barmer district on Sunday.A young man was allegedly held captive and assaulted after reportedly entering a house in the village.The accused allegedly cut off part of his moustache and hair, blackened his face, and humiliated him by forcing him to wear a garland made of shoes.Videos of the incident went viral on social media on Sunday, prompting immediate police action.One accused has been detained, while efforts are underway to identify and arrest the remaining suspects.According to Shiv Police, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon. The youth was allegedly caught by villagers after entering a house.Instead of informing the police, the accused reportedly confined him, assaulted him, cut his hair and half of his moustache, and garlanded him with slippers and shoes to publicly humiliate him.After the videos surfaced online, police launched an investigation and called the victim’s family members to record their statements.Further legal action will be taken based on their complaint.The Station House Officer (SHO) said police had received information on Saturday that a young man had entered a house in the village and was caught by locals.It was later found that he had allegedly been assaulted and humiliated. The SHO termed the act of cutting the victim’s hair and making him wear a shoe garland as unlawful and said police teams have been formed to identify all those involved.One of the viral videos, lasting 1 minute and 4 seconds, shows the victim sitting on the ground with a shoe garland around his neck while a man cuts his hair and moustache.Several people are seen slapping him, while children can also be seen in the background.Another 45-second video shows the victim surrounded by a group of people, with some asking for scissors and a pan while others continue to slap him.A few individuals present at the scene are also seen trying to stop the assault.Barmer Additional Superintendent of Police Nitesh Arya said the viral videos relate to Saturday’s incident in Joranada village under Shiv police station limits.Preliminary investigation revealed that the youth was allegedly assaulted and humiliated after entering a house. Police have detained Swaroop Nath, a resident of Bachhrau, and further investigation is in progress.
