Jhunjhunu: UDH minister Jhabar Singh Kharra’s son, Durga Singh Kharra, filed his nomination as an independent candidate from ward 19 of Shrimadhopur Panchayat Samiti in Sikar district Wednesday, citing discontent among BJP workers and requests from voters to step away from the ruling party umbrella.Durga Singh filed his nomination before the returning officer and SDM Saurav Bhambu on the second day of the nomination process for phase-II of the ongoing Panchayati Raj elections. He said he had not sought a BJP ticket and decided to contest independently after voters and party workers expressed dissatisfaction with the saffron party for the past two-and-a-half years. “Voters who have been associated with our family for generations told me that it would be difficult for them to support me if I contested on the BJP ticket, but they would stand by me if I contested as an independent,” he said, indicating local discontent with the ruling party.Durga Singh said he had taken the decision keeping in mind the sentiments of voters and party workers, while maintaining that he remained committed to BJP’s ideology. “BJP is still in the minds of the workers, but they have expressed their feelings through my independent nomination,” he said. The cabinet minister’s son added that the matter would be discussed in detail after rural elections and efforts would be made to persuade the workers, reiterating that his family had been associated with BJP ideology since the Jan Sangh days and that he intended to continue following it.
