Two held from Kerala in Rs 2.1cr digital arrest case
Accused in police custody

Jaipur: City police Tuesday arrested two men in Kerala for allegedly helping withdraw money siphoned off in a Rs 2.15 crore digital arrest targeting a 90-year-old Jaipur man, with investigators tracing their links to transactions worth Rs 70 lakh.DCP (South) Rajarshi Raj Varma said that the accused, Anand Babu (26) and Ibin Basil (31), were arrested in Ernakulam after police traced an account through which Rs 70 lakh had been routed. Investigators found that Rs 5 lakh each was transferred from this account to two bank accounts in Kerala, whose holders allegedly withdrew the money through cheques.Varma said the arrests followed an investigation into a case registered at Jyoti Nagar police station on Aug 12. Police obtained a transit remand for the accused and brought them to Jaipur, where they were remanded to police custody for further questioning.Investigators found that the Rs 2.15 crore allegedly taken from the victim had passed through multiple layers into hundreds of bank accounts. Police have frozen identified accounts and obtained their statements and transaction details to trace the money and establish the roles of those involved. The fraud involved a so-called digital arrest in which callers allegedly impersonated a CBI officer and an RBI manager and threatened the elderly victim with arrest in a fabricated hawala case. The victim was allegedly pressured into transferring money in several instalments.Police have registered the case under the BNS and under the Information Technology Act. Further investigation is under way.
