Jaipur: Three councillors were allegedly abducted at gunpoint in Sri Vijaynagar in Sriganganagar district Monday, triggering protests outside the police station ahead of the municipal board chairperson election. Police later rescued all three and enabled them to cast their votes, officials said. The reported firing and abduction have not been independently established by police.The councillors were identified as Mangatram of Ward 20, Pyarelal of Ward 21 and independent councillor Vijay Kumar of Ward 13. Congress workers alleged that the three were attacked and taken away from a nursery on Bajuwala Road.Following the allegations, Congress workers gathered outside Sri Vijaynagar police station, where barricades were removed and clashes were reported between protesters and police. Additional forces were deployed as tension mounted.Sriganganagar SP Hari Shankar said police had rescued Mangatram and Pyarelal and were working to trace Vijay Kumar. Police also detained at least six people in connection with the alleged incident.By 7 pm, police had rescued Vijay Kumar, who was allowed to cast his vote after the voting deadline was extended following intervention by the district election officer.Earlier, Vijay Kumar’s wife approached Rajasthan High Court with a habeas corpus petition, alleging that her husband had been abducted at gunpoint while travelling to vote in the chairperson election. The court directed the SP to trace him and ensure he was given an opportunity to vote before the extended deadline.
