Jaipur: With urban local body elections scheduled for September 11, state residents are seeking greater participation from councillors nominated to govt school management committees, saying their active involvement could help address civic and infrastructure issues affecting schools.Community members said regular participation by councillors in committee meetings could improve school infrastructure and services and, in turn, help boost student enrolment.Mohammad Yusuf, a resident of Bhatta Basti in Shastri Nagar, said a govt school in his locality had remained closed for eight years. “Initially, the school was shut because the building was in a dilapidated condition. Even after a new building was constructed around three years ago, the school has remained closed because there are no teachers. If we get an active councillor, they can raise these issues with the local MLA, and children in the area can benefit,” he said.As per guidelines issued by the Union education ministry in May 2026, every school, including secondary schools, must constitute a school management committee. The committee is to include officials, parents or guardians, representatives of local authorities, academicians, subject experts, alumni and representatives of disadvantaged groups. The number of members can be decided based on student enrolment.Ameen Kayamkhani, state president of the Rajasthan Urdu Teachers Association, said the role of councillors was particularly important in areas with a high minority population. “In the past few years, several schools with low enrolment have been merged. Due to these mergers, many students for whom the new school is far away eventually drop out. If we get an active councillor, such issues can be raised with higher authorities,” he said.Govt school teachers also said councillors could help expedite issues such as cleanliness of school campuses, waste collection and ensuring adequate drinking water supply.
