Protesters in Jaisalmer back Sonam Wangchuk, submit memo to President

Jaisalmer: Students and citizens staged a protest in Jaisalmer Monday in support of Ladakh-based environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, marching to the district collectorate and submitting a memorandum to the President through District Collector Anupama Jorwal. The protesters gathered at Gandhi Darshan near Hanuman Circle, raised slogans and marched to the collectorate, urging the govt to consider Wangchuk’s demands. They also burned an effigy of Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging shortcomings in the country’s education system.Protesters said Wangchuk’s demands went beyond Ladakh and concerned issues of national importance, particularly environmental protection and constitutional rights. The protest remained peaceful, with participants signing the memorandum at the collectorate in support of the movement. One of the protesters, Hakamdan, said the campaign to protect Ladakh’s fragile environment and safeguard constitutional rights evolved into a nationwide movement. He claimed people across the country stood in solidarity with Wangchuk and said similar protests would continue until his demands were met.
