Jaipur: The process to declare an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Ramgarh Vishdhari, Rajasthan’s newest notified tiger reserve, has formally begun. A draft proposal recommended a minimum buffer of 1 kilometre around the reserve, aiming to balance conservation priorities with the developmental needs of nearby habitations.Spread over 1,501.89 sq km, Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve (RVTR) was notified in 2022 as the fourth tiger reserve in Rajasthan. The proposed ESZ will cover 1,215.96 sq km, with its width varying between 1 km and 14.79 km. According to the draft, the ESZ will include Core-I (930.47 sq km) and Core-II (285.49 sq km, part of the National Chambal Sanctuary).Officials said that after the issuance of the draft notification, the public will have 75 days to submit objections and suggestions. The final notification will be issued following the review of these submissions. Currently, a 10-km eco-sensitive buffer applies by default in many areas, often leading to restrictions on land use, property registration, and access to basic services. Reducing the minimum ESZ limit to 1 km is expected to benefit hundreds of villages around RVTR. Authorities believe this step will facilitate development work, improve access to amenities, boost eco-tourism, and create livelihood opportunities—without compromising conservation goals. A state-level monitoring committee has also been constituted to oversee the sustainable management of the proposed zone and ensure ecological balance. tnn
