Udaipur: The additional district and sessions court of Sagwara in Dungarpur district Thursday awarded death penalty to a man for raping and murdering an elderly woman. The court said that the punishment should instill fear in those who might harbour similar intentions in future and maintain the victims’ trust in the administration.The court remarked that the death penalty was the only option in this case. The dignity and honour of the deceased were tarnished, resulting in lifelong trauma for the woman’s husband and family. After the woman’s death, her husband and family suffered an unforgettable shock.Public prosecutor Nikhil Sompura said that the elderly couple lived separately in a village in the Kua police station area of Dungarpur. On June 3, 2022, their granddaughter went to their house to deliver food. After serving the meal, she was returning home when she found her grandmother lying injured some distance away from home. Before being taken to hospital, the victim told the girl that their neighbour, Hurji Bamaniya (45), had entered her house in an inebriated condition and raped her. The victim said that Hurji attacked her with a knife before raping her. The victim was rushed to a hospital where she died during treatment, Sompura said.The police registered a case of rape and murder and arrested the accused on June 6, 2022. After completing the investigation, a chargesheet was filed in Sagwara court.
