Kota govt hospital reports second postpartum death after C-section in 24 hrs

Kota: Another postpartum woman died following a Caesarean section at New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) in Kota within 24 hours, triggering fresh public anger over maternal healthcare services in the state.Roshan Bairwa, a resident of Baran, was admitted to NMCH from a private hospital Friday evening with severe anaemia and malnutrition, weighing around 39–40 kg. She underwent a C-section around midnight, after which her condition deteriorated rapidly. She died Saturday morning. The earlier death occurred late Friday night when 40-year-old Reshma, a resident of Kota’s Chhawni area, died during treatment after developing acute kidney-related complications following her fourth C-section delivery on Oct 14.NMCH Superintendent Dr Ashutosh Sharma said Roshan was a high-risk pregnancy case referred from a private facility. He said she developed continuous severe postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) after the surgery and, despite a blood transfusion and being taken back to the operation theatre, doctors were unable to stop the bleeding. She succumbed around 11:30 am Saturday, he said.Dr Sharma stated Roshan’s death was unrelated to the acute kidney failure cases linked to previous C-section patients in May. He also said the cause differed from that of Reshma, who died Friday night, and from that of Anita (30), who underwent a C-section with Reshma on Oct 14 but is currently under treatment with signs of recovery.Hospital authorities said Roshan’s family submitted a written statement declining an autopsy and further action, after which the body was handed over. The back-to-back fatalities have intensified scrutiny of NMCH, five months after a May 5 incident at the same hospital in which 12 postpartum women developed acute renal failure following C-sections, leading to the deaths of five women—Payal, Jyoti, Pinky, Priya and Shireen—while seven others survived after extensive treatment.
